Canon lands 5 TIPA "Best Photo and Imaging" Product Awards

Written by on May 30th, 2013.      0 comments

ive Canon products were selected for this year’s “Best Photo and Imaging Product” awards by the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA), representing 28 photography and imaging magazines from 15 countries across 5 continents. The five Canon award-winning products are: the EOS 6D digital SLR (DSLR) camera, the EOS 100D DSLR camera, the EOS-1D C DSLR cinema camera, the EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM interchangeable lens, and the PIXMA PRO-10 inkjet printer.
“Winning five of the world’s most respected awards across still-image, video and printing products is a proud achievement for Canon and testament to more than 75 years of dedication to quality imaging,” says Kim Conner, General Manager – Consumer Imaging, Canon New Zealand. “The great news for New Zealand consumers at all levels is that recent price drops at local retailers and dealers means that these award-winning products are now more affordable than ever.”
Canon’s TIPA Award details

Best DSLR Expert in 2013 – the Canon EOS 6D was recognised by the TIPA jury for “melding consumer-oriented features with a very advanced set of options.” Employing a 20.2-megapixel 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor, the 6D not only achieves the world’s smallest, lightest body among DSLR cameras equipped with a 35 mm full-frame sensor,*1 but also delivers “excellent quality at its highest ‘native’ ISO of 25,600 and beyond.” Realising superior ease of use, the 6D includes such functions as a “Q button” that, once pushed, opens a screen menu displaying often used controls, making for a “very pleasing and fast shooting experience.”

Best DSLR Entry Level in 2013 – the Canon EOS 100D features a “very portable and lightweight body,” creating an “attractive option” for users seeking DSLR operability and access to Canon’s wide range of interchangeable EF lenses. Supporting high image quality even in low-light settings, the camera’s APS-C-size approximately 18.0-megapixel CMOS sensor offers an ISO range of 100–12,800 for still images and 100–6,400 for video, while the Hybrid CMOS AF II makes possible accurate focus tracking during Live View shooting.

Best Video DSLR in 2013 – the Canon EOS-1D C was recognised for its 35 mm full-frame approximately 18.0-megapixel CMOS sensor that enables the capture of not only 4K (4,096 x 2,160 pixels) and Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) video, but also high-quality still images, “making it an extremely versatile camera for today’s pro shooters.” Part of Canon’s Cinema EOS System line-up of cinematography products, the TIPA panel noted that the EOS-1D C is “geared towards film and TV production, as well as specialty work.”

Best Professional DSLR Lens in 2013 – the Canon EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM delivers exceptional image quality as well as enhanced durability and reliability thanks to its improved dust sealing and water resistance. Comprising 18 elements in 13 groups, the lens utilises a Super UD and two UD lens elements as well as two types of aspherical elements, making possible high-resolution, high-contrast imaging performance across the entire zoom range. The TIPA jury also commended the EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM’s optimised lens coatings, which help to minimise the occurrence of ghosting, and ring-type USM and high-speed CPU with optimized AF algorithms, enabling “silent and fast auto-focusing performance.”

Best Expert Photo Printer in 2013 – the Canon PIXMA PRO-10 inkjet printer supports wireless connectivity, and features the ten-colour LUCIA ink system that, working together with the Chroma Optimizer, helps eliminate bronzing and ensure a uniform gloss finish. The professional-use printer features a rear tray and rear manual feed slot that accommodates heavy-grade paper, while its 7,680 4-picoliter-size nozzles deliver a high-resolution performance of up to 4,800 x 2,400 dots per inch for both colour and monochrome output.

About the TIPA Awards

Held every year since 1991, the TIPA Awards recognise the best photo and imaging products announced during the previous 12 months based on such criteria as innovativeness, use of leading-edge technologies, design, and ease of use. In 1992, Canon took home its first TIPA accolade for the EOS 100 SLR camera and, over 21 separate occasions since then, has been honoured with TIPA awards for a total of 65 products and technologies. This year also marks the company’s 19th year in a row to be a recipient of a TIPA award.*2

*1 As of May 1, 2013. Based on a Canon survey.
*2 Includes the EOS D2000, an SLR camera jointly developed with Eastman Kodak Company that was selected for the TIPA 1998-1999 “Best Pro Digital Camera” award.

Canon EOS 5D Mark III firmware upgrade provides significant stillshooting
and Full HD video improvements

Supports advanced user needs through clean HDMI output for video and boosted AF
performance for low-light and telephoto shooting

Auckland, 30 April 2013 – Canon New Zealand today announced that the new firmware upgrade for the EOS 5D Mark III digital SLR camera is now available for download, delivering considerable improvements to still-shooting and Full HD video. The new free-of-charge upgrade will allow users to boost the EOS 5D Mark III’s potential, opening the door to new imaging opportunities.

The upgrade, which was first announced in October 2012, enables the use of the HDMI output functionality for more efficient video editing and monitoring workflows by professionals in the fields of cinema and TV production. With HDMI output, users can record HD uncompressed video data (YCbCr 4:2:2, 8 bit) to an external recorder via the camera’s HDMI terminal, offering minimal image degradation during video data editing for greater onsite efficiency during motion picture and video productions. Additionally, video can also be displayed on an external monitor while being captured, for real-time on site monitoring for HD video during shoots.

To further improve functionality, the upgrade improves the AF system with centre AF point now enabled at f/8 supporting the needs of photographers to achieve more from their camera when using fast super-telephoto lenses with extenders. Drastically increasing the shooting range, version 1.2.1 now makes it possible to use an EF600 f/4 lens and two-times extender to achieve a massive 1200mm focal length with precise AF performance. This will benefit sport and nature photographers who shoot over long distances. This upgrade also increases the range of lens options with full AF
capabilities, including the EF400mm f/5.6 and the EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS with 1.4x extenders, for zoom ranges up to 560mm.

“The EOS 5D Mark III, continues to lead the way in DSLR Full HD Movie making and with this new update Canon has responded to the needs of professional image makers by providing them with clean HDMI output, as well as boosted AF performance for telephoto shooting over an expanded range of focal lengths,” said Jeremy Burgess, Product Manager – Technical Imaging Specialist, Canon New Zealand. “We’re excited to be offering these features in direct response to requests from professionals working in the fields of cinema and TV production, and expect the firmware to enhance
the user experience and workflow.”

Live from Las Vegas! New Product Releases from NAB 2013:

SYDNEY, 07 April 2013 – Sony today announced the launch of the new HXR-IFR5 interface unit which will connect the NEX-FS700 camcorder and the AXS-R5 RAW recorder. With this combination, 4K RAW recording will be available with the NEX-FS700.

By applying a firmware upgrade to the NEX-FS700, 4K/2K RAW output via the 3G HD-SDI terminal will be available. The new HXR-IFR5 interface unit is equipped with an SDI terminal that can be used to input RAW data from the camcorder and pass the data to the AXS-R5 RAW recorder. AXS-R5 is able to record RAW data onto an AXS memory card.

The frame rates in 4K (4096x2160) recording mode are 24p, 25p, 30p, 50p and 60p. In 4K mode, 120fps high speed recording will be available for a limited duration of approximately 4 seconds. In 2K (2048x1080) recording mode, continuous 240fps and 120fps shooting will be available at unlimited durations.

The workflow to process RAW data will be exactly the same as the RAW workflow used in the combination of the existing CineAlta™ 4K cameras, PMW-F55/F5, and the AXS-R5.

Expectation of access to and interest in 4K is becoming greater, even in the low cost content creation market. The combination of HXR-IFR5 with the NEX-FS700 and the AXS-R5 will be a perfect choice, and will expand the possibilities of content creation to the next level.

Basic Features of HXR-IFR5

External RAW recorder for NEX-FS700 via SDI

The AXS-R51 docked onto the HXR-IFR5 will become an external RAW recorder for the NEX-FS7002. Connection with the NEX-FS700 will use a single 3G HD-SDI cable, therefore various shooting styles are possible. The NEX-FS700 can become a camera head when used separately, or it can be used like a camcorder if the whole system is mounted onto a rig. Sony has provided a 1/4 inch screw hole for those kinds of rig solutions. HXR-IFR5 will use the power source on the AXS-R5, and the AXS-R5 can be powered by a BP-FL75 lithium ion battery pack or an external DC 12V power source using the XLR 4 pin power input.

16 bit linear RAW recording onto the AXS memory card

The combination of the HXR-IFR5 and the AXS-R5 makes recording 16-bit linear RAW files onto an AXS memory card possible. Thanks to the 16-bit linear RAW recording, the full potential of the 4K imager on the NEX-FS700 – its broad latitude and high colour resolution – can be captured in the recorded RAW files.

Using the AXS-CR1 card reader, recorded RAW files can be easily transferred to a PC and the “RAW Viewer3” software provided by Sony used to view, process and also do some simple colour grading on the files. Not only high quality motion picture footage, but high resolution 8.4M still pictures can also be captured.

4K/2K high speed shooting

Other than 4K (4096x2160) recording at 24p/25p/30p/50p/60p, 120fps recording in 4K resolution is available for approximately 4 seconds. Also, in 2K (2048x1080) recording mode, 240fps/120fps high speed continuous recording is available for unlimited time. These high speed recording modes4 are only possible with the combination of NEX-FS700, HXR-IFR5 and the AXS-R5.

AVCHD simultaneous recording on NEX-FS700

Even in RAW recording mode5, NEX-FS700 can simultaneously record AVCHD onto the camera’s memory card. The recorded AVCHD files will have the same time code as the RAW files, meaning the AVCHD files can be used as proxy files for off-line editing.

HD output for monitoring

HDMI/component/composite video outputs on the NEX-FS700 and the AUX OUT of the AXS-R5 can be used for monitoring purposes. In order to achieve accurate monitoring of the wide dynamic range made possible by RAW recording, Sony has added S-Log2 settings to the picture profile of the NEX-FS700.

* Note: The gamma setting cannot be set individually for each video out/LCD panel/AVCHD recording.

The HXR-IFR5 interface unit will be available from the end of June 2013 onwards.

1 AXS-R5 will need an updated firmware version which will be provided by the time of the sales of HXR-IFR5.
2 NEX-FS700 will need a service upgrade (charged option).
3 Version 1.1 or later is necessary.
4 Audio is not recorded in high speed RAW recording modes.
5 AVCHD cannot be recorded in high speed RAW recording mode.

Canon announce the new EOS 100D & EOS 700D

Written by Bonnie Parker on March 22nd, 2013.      0 comments

Creative photography is now more accessible than ever with the most advanced entry-level EOS and the worlds smallest and lightest APS-C DSLR camera*

21/03/13: Canon today unveils two first-class EOS models to take the helm of its entry-level consumer DSLR camera line-up – the flagship EOS 700D and ultra-compact EOS 100D. While each is designed to suit specific user requirements, both cameras are packed with high-quality and creative features that are ideal for creative-minded consumers looking to take their photography to the next level.

The world’s smallest and lightest APS-C DSLR camera*, the all-new EOS 100D, offers both quality specifications and fun creative features for those who like to think big, but travel light. The EOS 700D is the most advanced entry-level EOS model to date, giving consumers the tools they need to add a creative edge to their photography. Complemented by the introduction of a new standard zoom lens, the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, both new models offer outstanding 18 Megapixel resolution with simple touch screen operation, making it easy to capture and relive every moment in stunning detail.

“The new Canon EOS models have been designed specifically for those with a passion for creativity looking to step up and explore the next level of photography,” says Jeremy Burgess, Product Manager – Technical Imaging Specialist, Canon New Zealand. “Both cameras include high-quality and advanced features that Canon is renowned for, making them powerful creative tools for hobbyist photographers with huge scope to grow into the camera as their skills develop. What’s more, with its ultra-compact and lightweight design, the EOS 100D is the ideal choice for those who do not want to be held back by size and want to be creative on the go.”

Replacing the EOS 650D and sitting above the successful EOS 600D, the EOS 700D is Canon’s most advanced consumer EOS model to date. Boasting 5 frames-per-second (fps) shooting, a wide 9-point all cross type AF system and Vari-angle Clear View II LCD touch screen, it is the ideal camera for those wanting to ignite their creativity. The new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is the ideal standard zoom lens for both new EOS cameras, combining Canon’s leading Optical Image Stabilizer and Stepping Motor (STM) technologies to deliver minimal image blur and smooth, near-silent focus in movies.

The EOS 700D - Ignite your creativity

The EOS 700D is powered by a Canon-designed and manufactured 18.0 Megapixel APS-C Hybrid CMOS sensor and DiG!C 5 image processor, which combine to deliver outstanding levels of resolution – producing images that are consistently rich in detail and colour. Offering up to 5fps shooting, the EOS 700D is ideal for capturing fast-paced action, but is equally at home with landscapes and portraiture, generating high quality and detail. Additionally with a native 100-12,800 ISO range (expandable to 25,600), the EOS 700D is capable of capturing remarkable levels of detail even when shooting in tricky low-light conditions without the need for a flash – bringing confidence to those new to DSLR photography.

The EOS 700D’s advanced AF System consists of 9 high-performance, cross-type points spread across the frame, delivering greater focusing speed and accuracy to ensure photographers can always keep desired subjects in focus, even as they move around. With the option to manually select and adjust focus points, or simply use full automatic mode, the EOS 700D provides aspiring photographers with an easy way to explore different kinds of image composition as their confidence grows.

The EOS 700D features a new, simplified 360° rotating mode dial to provide easy and swift access to the camera’s various shooting modes. A 7.7cm (3.0”) Vari-angle Clear View LCD II Touch screen also makes it easy for users to adjust settings as well as frame, shoot and review from a variety of angles. A new external coating, adopted from Canon’s mid-range EOS models, also provides a more robust and durable finish.

The EOS 100D – set your creativity free
The EOS 100D is the smallest and lightest APS-C DSLR in the world*, making it compact enough to take everywhere so you can capture adventures in stunning quality. Measuring just 116.8 x 90.7 x 69.4mm and weighing only 407g, the incredibly lightweight and compact body also features a bright Optical Viewfinder – giving users the full, responsive experience of a DSLR in a compact form. The EOS 100D also features a large 7.7cm (3.0”) ClearView II Capacitive Touch screen – making it easy to adjust settings and instantly review shots after capture – valued by people on the go.

At the heart of the EOS 100D is a brand-new 18.0 Megapixel APS-C Hybrid CMOS AF II Sensor, which combines with the power of the DiG!C 5 image processor to deliver stunning results in virtually any situation. The new sensor uses phase detection pixels spread across 80 per cent of the sensors imaging surface to provide increased AF speed and tracking performance when the camera is in live view or when capturing Full-HD movies. Capable of shooting at speeds of up to 4fps, the EOS 100D is equally comfortable with fast paced action on holidays as it is with special moments with family and

Unique to the new EOS 100D is the in-camera cropping feature, which allows users to crop images to their liking without the need of a laptop or computer – making it simple for users to create their perfect shot while on the go. Users can crop an image at the angle and aspect ratio of their choice while viewing the image on the camera’s LCD display, with the new image saved as a separate file. With the cameras 18.0 Megapixel CMOS sensor, cropped images will remain crisp and clear, preserving the rich detail of the original image.

Enhanced creative modes
Both the EOS 700D and EOS 100D feature a range of super easy-to-use shooting modes and creative filters – making it simple for beginners to start with creative pre-sets and then explore their creativity as their confidence grows. Scene Intelligent Auto mode automatically detects the scene being shot and selects best settings so users can simply focus on the image, letting the camera decide the best combination of settings for the scene. Both new models also offer a range of dedicated scene modes, with the EOS 100D featuring new Kids, Food and Candlelight modes, designed to ensure optimum results with stunning detail in a range of familiar situations.

The exciting range of Creative Filters that Canon is known for, including Fish-eye and Miniature effect, is now even more dynamic and can now be applied before capture thanks to new real-time filter previews – providing the perfect way to pick the most suitable effect for specific moments before you actually take the shot. Photographers can also learn how to adjust their images with enhanced Creative Auto Mode and using new Extra Effect Shot mode on the EOS 100D, users can even capture two images simultaneously – one with a Creative Filter applied, as well as one standard image.

Explore easy and smooth videography with EOS Movies
Aspiring photographers can add another dimension to capturing their memories, using EOS Movies to shoot their precious moments in glorious Full HD resolution (1920x1080p). The Hybrid CMOS AF system in 700D and the Hybrid CMOS AF II system in 100D allow for continuous AF constantly tracking subjects during shooting. Additionally, Video Snapshot mode makes it easy to capture and edit short video clips to bring to life an exciting day, such as road trips and weddings. Thanks to Canon’s new Stepping Motor (STM) technology, the AF system remains silent, helping ensure users only capture the sound of the scene being recorded.

EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM – A standard STM zoom lens, for everyday photos and video
The new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is the perfect lens for EOS 700D and EOS 100D users to start their photography adventure. From sweeping landscapes to portraits, the versatile 18-55mm zoom range means users can enjoy the flexibility of getting close to subjects or getting more in the shot. Images are captured with precision detail and clarity thanks to a 4-stop Optical Image Stabilizer, which also lets photographers use lower ISO levels and longer shutter speeds. The fulltime manual focus ring allows users to make precise focus adjustments, while the near-silent STM technology also ensures noise is kept to a minimum while focusing – perfect for when capturing movies.

Sony introduces new XAVC recording format to accelerate 4K development in professional and consumer markets

Written by SONY NZ on October 31st, 2012.      0 comments

Sydney, 30 October 2012 – Sony today launched the new XAVC recording format that will be at the heart of its new industry-leading 4K products. Sony’s XAVC provides a dedicated 4K format that will encourage the adoption of 4K beyond feature films, into genres such as TV drama, entertainment shows, documentaries and commercials.

“The new XAVC format underlines Sony’s commitment to bringing high quality content to the consumer market”, said Takao Yoshikawa, Senior General Manager of Content Creation Solutions Business Division, Professional Solutions Group, Sony Corporation. “The quality of HDTV program originated in 4K is simply stunning and will allow both broadcasters and the production community to build a future-proof catalogue of high-end content, now.”

In addition to widespread applications for the professional HDTV market, Sony has developed the XAVC format to
enable the expansion of 4K content into the consumer market. XAVC has been designed to provide a future proof
codec that can meet the shifting requirements of the fast developing 4K content production and HD120P high
frame rate shooting.

Sony’s XAVC format employs MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 level 5.2, the highest picture resolution and frame rate video
compression codec based on industry standards. XAVC enables a very wide range of operational possibilities for
content production, notably: from Proxy to 4K pixel resolutions, intra frame and long GOP schemes, and 1080
50P/60P infrastructure capability.

Built with the principles of workflow efficiency, evolution and optimised image quality at its heart, Sony’s XAVC can
support the following content formats:
• 4K (4096 x 2160 and 3840 x 2160), HD and proxy resolution
• MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video compression
• 12, 10 and 8 bit colour depth
• Up to 60fps
• MXF wrapping format can be used
• 4:4:4, 4:2:2, 4:2:0 colour sampling

XAVC has been developed as an open format, providing a license program for other manufacturers in the broadcast and production industry to develop their own high quality and high frame rate products. The following fourteen leading manufacturers’ products plan on their support for Sony XAVC format and workflow:

• Non Linear Editors : Adobe® CS6 with Rovi Total Code Plug-in installed, Avid, Final Cut Pro X , Grass Valley, Quantel, Rovi, and Sony Vegas Pro 12
• On-set dailies : Assimilate, Codex, Colorfront, FilmLight, MTI, and YoYotta
• Colour Grading : Assimilate, FilmLight, and Quantel
• Software codec : Rovi
• Codec board : Matrox

Note: Each licensed manufacturer will decide which profile and operational characteristics of XAVC they will implement in their products. For more information, please visit:
